For close to a year, Second Family Home Care has enjoyed a wonderful relationship with Treasured Times and Custer Road United Methodist Church in Plano. Director of Marketing Tim Powell volunteers two days each month for the program, and especially enjoys assisting Director Barbara Hutson with music time!
Second Family recently helped Treasured Times celebrate the Fall Season including a nod to baseball and the World Series. Participants and volunteers had a great time decorating a variety of shapes and sizes of gourds as an art project. The meeting room was charmingly decorated with a baseball theme, and many of those in attendance wore baseball jerseys and hats in honor of their favorite teams. Second Family’s owner Becca Metoyer donated and helped serve Nathan’s hot dogs for everyone’s lunch. After all, nothing says “baseball” better than a hot dog!

Treasured Times is an Alzheimer’s Respite Ministry of Custer Road United Methodist Church in Plano. The program exists to provide a much-needed break to the caregiver, allowing time for errands, appointments or personal enrichment, and to provide those with the early symptoms of Alzheimer’s or dementia a special time for social interaction, friendship and fun. It is their belief that caregiving should not be a solitary endeavor – and it does not have to be. By sharing the responsibility of care, the lives of the patient and the caregiver are enriched.
For four hours each week, Treasured Times participants take part in captivating activities such as music, exercise, arts and crafts and reminiscing projects. All activities are designed to entertain the participants while preserving their skills and improving self-esteem. Each person is paired with a “friend” who volunteers with the ministry to be the personal companion to a guest. The friends and guests develop very meaningful relationships and look forward to seeing each other every week.
